The Chesters Scholarship was established through the generosity of Pamela J Chesters CBE (Class of 1979) and Alan Chesters to support students from care-experienced backgrounds who wish to study at the University of St Andrews. It forms part of the University’s Wardlaw Scholarship Scheme, launched in 2004 to provide financial assistance to academically able students who may face financial barriers to higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Chesters Scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be applying for a full-time or part-time daytime undergraduate degree

  • Be classified as Scotland home or Rest of UK for fee status

  • Be care-experienced

  • Be a prospective student applying to the University of St Andrews

  • Demonstrate financial need means-tested

  • Be studying in any subject area no subject restrictions

Benefits

  • Value: £4,400 per year

  • Purpose: Maintenance support can also be used towards University accommodation fees

  • Payment Schedule:

    • Paid in 10 monthly instalments September to May

    • Double payment in February

    • Paid directly to the student’s bank account via BACS

  • Students may choose to offset part or all of the award against University accommodation costs during matriculation.

Application Process

The Chesters Scholarship cannot be applied for individually. Applicants must apply through the St Andrews Access Award application form.

  1. Apply for an undergraduate course at the University of St Andrews 2026–2027 entry.

  2. Receive login details for the My Application portal allow at least two working days.

  3. Log in and complete the St Andrews Access Award application.

  4. Upload all required financial evidence or alternative documentation if applicable.

  5. Submit the application before the deadline.

Important: You do not need to wait for an offer from the University to apply for this scholarship.
