The University of Leicester, in collaboration with Metal Focus Ltd, is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the Geology Award for the academic year 2025/2026. This prestigious scholarship is aimed at supporting undergraduate applicants of Black African, Black Caribbean, or mixed Black heritage who are commencing a full-time, campus-based Geology degree BSc or MGeol in September 2025.

The University of Leicester began in 1921 as Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland University College, founded as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War. It became an independent university with its own degree-awarding powers in 1957. Over the years, it has gained international recognition for major discoveries such as the development of genetic fingerprinting and the discovery of King Richard III’s remains. Today, it is known for its strong research focus, diverse student community, and commitment to innovation and social inclusion.

Background

The Geology Award is a targeted initiative launched by the University of Leicester with the generous support of Metal Focus Ltd, a key player in the metals and mining sector. Recognising the underrepresentation of Black students in Earth science disciplines, this scholarship has been created to promote inclusion, remove financial barriers, and encourage wider participation in the field of Geology.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black British, or Mixed heritage including Black background.

  • Hold an offer from the University of Leicester for one of the following full-time, campus-based undergraduate degrees:

    • Geology BSc

    • Geology MGeol

  • Be classified as a Home student for tuition fee purposes.

  • Have lived permanently in the UK for the past three years in:

    • A POLAR 4 Quintile 1 low participation in higher education area or

    • An IMD Decile 1-2 socio-economically deprived area.

  • Have a household income of £30,000 or less, verified by Student Loans Company or supporting documents.
