Background

The Placement Bursary was established by the University of Bath to support students facing financial challenges during their unpaid placement year. Recognizing the importance of practical experience in higher education, the University created this bursary to ensure that all students, regardless of their financial background, can take full advantage of valuable placement opportunities without the burden of financial stress.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Placement Bursary, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Home UK undergraduate student.
  • Be in receipt of the Bath Bursary, Gold Scholarship, Cowrie Foundation Scholarship, or Discretionary Student Support Fund.
  • Be undertaking an unpaid placement period or study abroad as part of your degree during the 2024/25 academic year.

Benefits

  • £2,000 for a full-year unpaid placement and/or study abroad.
  • £1,000 for a placement year that is part paid and part unpaid, or a thin sandwich placement that is unpaid.

Please note, if you are doing a full-year paid placement or a paid thin sandwich placement, you will not be eligible for the Placement Bursary.

Application Process

The good news is that there is no formal application process for the Placement Bursary. Awards are automatic based on the information held by the University. However, it is crucial to ensure that your department’s placements team has all the necessary information to code your placement correctly in Samis, the University’s student records system. This includes confirmation of whether your placement is paid or unpaid.

If you are receiving the Discretionary Student Support Fund, you will need to inform the relevant university departments about your placement circumstances via email.

Important Dates

Application Deadline: 18th November 2024.

Conclusion

The Placement Bursary is an excellent opportunity for students undertaking unpaid placements to receive financial support during a challenging academic year. By understanding the eligibility criteria, keeping track of important dates, and ensuring your placement details are accurate, you can maximize your chances of receiving this bursary. Remember to explore additional funding options and seek advice from the Student Money Advice Team if needed.
